New Delhi, the capital of India, is a modern and a developing city and is amust visit on your India tours and travel. Flyovers are mushrooming all across the city, the Delhi Metro is setting a new pace of life for commuters, and the city is hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Swanky malls and eating places cast their spell late into the night. Delhi is turning cosmopolitan. The city, however, continues to exert its traditional charm. The attraction of history is strong with medieval monuments strewn all over the landscape, besides the British legacy of Lutyen's Delhi. On one side is Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad), a maze of narrow serpentine lanes lined with shops dealing in antiques, spices, jewellery, amidst vendors who peddle almost anything imaginable. Chandni Chowk is the avenue that leads into the heart of this bazaar. The Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, is a walk away as are Fatehpuri Masjid, Town Hall, and several other majestic structures. Lutyen's Delhi with its tree-lined boulevards lead to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Secretariat, India Gate and the Parliament building: the seats of power. If there is one place that characterises the frantic pace of Delhi life, it is Connaught Place, popularly referred to as CP. This horseshoe shaped British-built complex offers spacious colonnaded verandahs that add a majestic touch to the shopping arcade it houses. Eight radial roads emanating from Connaught Place are lined with high rise buildings that house thousands of offices and business establishments. But down below, in the streets and pavements, shoppers are drawn to the expensive showrooms as well as impromptu pavement sellers. Nearby is Janpath, with its rows of shops selling traditional Indian ware - brocade cushion covers, tie and dye fabrics, bottles of ittar (fragrance), sandalwood and silver jewellery. Close at hand are the public sector state emporia on Baba Kharag Singh Marg, which display and sell the best handicrafts from each of the states of India. Besides, Connaught Place, Delhi abounds in shopping centres. Among the shopping areas the most frequented are the South Extension and the Greater Kailash I markets. 
Delhi is among the best connected cities in South Asia and is the most important gateway to north India. All major international airlines of the world operate services to Delhi connecting it to, virtually, all parts of the world. On the domestic network, Delhi is one of the two major hubs for air travel with flights reaching out to the most distant corners of the country. There are a number of flights daily to all the metros and a large number of cities. New Delhi is connected by trains to all the metros and most of the important tourist and trade destinations in the country. Delhi has four major railway stations. New Delhi Railway Station is the major junction of the capital and all major trains towards the east, west and south of the country originate and terminate here. The station is a 10-minute walk from Connaught Place and within short driving distance from most major hotels. Nizamuddin railway station is also conveniently located near South Delhi localities. Old Delhi Railway Station services many eastbound trains and metre-gauge traffic to Rajasthan and Gujarat. Sarai Rohilla Station covers most of the trains bound for Rajasthan. Some trains to Gujarat and to the North that begin at the New Delhi Railway Station also have brief stoppages here. Delhi Cantt Railway Station in the cantonment area, about 5-km away from the domestic airport, is the boarding point for the famous luxury train -- Palace on Wheels. Jaipur-bound trains, including the Shatabdi and trains to Ahmedabad that begin at the New Delhi Railway Station, stop here briefly.
